Content Management Systems

Content Management

In today’s world it’s critical to have your website built with some kind of a content management system. This allows updates to be done quickly, easily, and inexpensively, without the need to work with a professional web developer every time you change your content. It’s important to get a content management system that you find easy-to-use and you can get support for when you get stuck.

wp-dashboardThere are 3 main content management systems that come from the  “open source community.” These are WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal. They have all been around for a similar length of time but WordPress has by far the biggest market share. WordPress is generally considered easier to use with a user interface that is more intuitive, reducing the time it takes to learn.  All 3 of these platforms can be used to implement beautifully designed websites and give you all the tools you need to manage your own content. They also give you access to the tools necessary to do your own search engine optimization. They all have very large development communities with many different developers building tools and widgets that extend their capabilities.

There is a new generation of “drag and drop” content management solutions that have become quite popular recently. These are systems such as Wix and Weebly. Each of these solutions have limitations, and as long as you are willing to work within those limitations, they work great. It is important to note that the “Big 3″ also have “drag and drop” plugins that can be installed to make creating your pages easier.

Our recommendation: of the 3 main open-source systems WordPress is our preference.
